Inara’s knock on Kaylee’s door is always perfunctory, something she does absently as she enters; she’s normally already down the ladder before Kaylee can respond. Kaylee doesn’t mind, she likes that Inara is so free with her. It reminds her of her mother, actually, although it’s the only thing about Inara that does. The Companion’s world is so far from Kaylee’s that the fact that anything about Inara could remind her of home strains the boundaries of reality. But there it is
