London people, any suggestions for something good to do in London for a few hours in dubious weather tomorrow (the forecast keeps changing, but it's probably going to be rainy at least part of the day)? Somewhere off the beaten track would be good, and I'd love some walk suggestions in case the weather holds, but I'll need to be back for the ( Read more... )

There could be no better way to spend a few hours in London than at the British Museum. IMHO, of course.

I do love the British Museum. I generally tend to just pop in for an hour or two though, so I was thinking of something different for tomorrow, somewhere I can spend a good few hours. Also, I probably shouldn't be let loose in the British Museum shop - last time I was there I fell for some of the necklaces, and I really shouldn't be spending that sort of money on jewellery at the moment!

Lots of suggestions! I think Tennis museum in Wimbledon is fun if you like sports, otherwise Kew I think it might be a bit early in the year for (though I went in April last year and it was nice, but it wouldn't be warm to wander about I don't think!)

At Least with Science Museum you can do Victoria & Albert if you've never been - that's so big I don't think one can ever do it! - and Nat Hist all nearby if you have a few hours to kill.

Let us know what you do end up doing!

That's the trouble with having lived in London (just off Gloucester Road, so I was in the South Kensington museums a lot) - I've been most places! I think you're right about Kew - the forecast is a bit windy too, and there won't be a lot of flowers out, so not the best time for that. Maybe May.

I'm fairly decided on the Science Museum - I'm in the mood for that, and it's near Hyde Park for a walk if the weather's decent. But I'll let you know!

Mostly I walked! Through Kensington Gardens, a loop around Hyde Park, down Exhibition Road, a few hours at the Science Museum, including the 3D Hubble presentation, then along Brompton Road, Knightsbridge, down Constitution Hill and into St James Park, through Horse Guards, along the Embankment, and across to the South Bank for the evening. Couldn't have been nicer.

I could happily LIVE in the Natural History Museum for years and years - I love that place. Sure, the dodo is a little moth-eaten, but it's a *DODO*. And they have ways of making even things that might seem dull into really involving and interesting exhibits.

Oddly enough, considering one of my best friends (years ago) used to work there, I've never spent that much time there - I always gravitated across the road to the V&A. But I should go there again sometime soon. I think the Science Museum tomorrow, though.

I've not been to the Design Museum yet! Yay for something new - I'm going to put that on my list for another day. That'd be really handy for an hour or two if I'm going to the National in the evening.

greenwich observatory. Makes for both a good walk and a good museum.

Ah, I went there with my mother once when she was visiting for a bit - I remember it distinctly, because I was wearing brand new sandals, and once we got on the grass I took them off because they were killing me. It was a nice walk, you're right.
