The Generation Kill Transcript Project

Generation Kill peoples, I have a task for us!

There are subtitles for all the episodes online (minzky has linked the first six here, and I've managed to find the seventh), but, while useful, they're also limited: there are some mistakes, you can't tell who's talking, and dialogue is split into small chunks, irrespective of speaker. So my plan is to get a team together and make them a better resource for the fandom.

Here's a side-by-side sample, the original subtitles on the left, a revised version on the right.
SAMPLEObviously it's rough - I couldn't work out some of the off-screen voices for example, but it gives an idea of what we can aim for.

The Plan:

My plan is to have seven teams, each with a team leader, one for each episode. That way it won't be too much work for anyone. I've put the raw dialogue online in googledocs - I'll give teamleaders access to them, and then they can share the episode with their team. Episodes can be split into chunks, drafts passed around the team for further editing/checking, until the TL feels they have a finished version. When all the transcripts are as complete as we can make them, I'll put them online in various versions for reading or downloading (html, pdf, doc and txt), with credit to everyone who has helped.

I'm not putting a definite time limit on the project at the moment, though I don't think it should take more than a month if there are enough of us working on it.

Signing up:

I need one Gunny, seven TLs, one (or more) translator(s), and at least seven (ideally twenty-one or more) team members. The main qualifications are familiarity with/access to the series, and ability to work accurately.

Gunny: Someone who'll help me brainstorm ideas and be back up for questions when I'm not around. Ideally online a fair amount. eta: Job taken.

Team leaders: You should be good at organising people, have plenty of time to spend brainstorming with myself and the other TLs and organising your team, and an eye for detail. Familiarity with googledocs would be very useful.

Translator(s): You should be particularly good at recognising voices - I need someone to help fill names of background/off screen speakers if the teams can't manage it.

Team members: Anyone who'd like to work on the project, who has at least a small amount of spare time over the next few weeks. Access to the DVDs is an advantage, as I've noticed the subtitles on those are slightly different from the ones online, but it isn't essential. As long as at least one member of each team has the DVDs, that should be fine. You don't need to be familiar with googledocs - I can provide links to tutorials.

Sign up details:

Name/LJ or DW name:
Email:
Preferred job(s) in order of preference - TL, translator or team member:

Once I have teams sorted and enough people to get started, I'll make a new post listing the teams and any further details needed.
