This story is lovely and I think Ultimus is a wonderful creature! I really like the theory for why it chooses to communicate with Rodney -- as well as the Satedan tale of the Caranduu. It's so sweet how touched Rodney is that Ultimus should choose to reach out to him, even though he won't admit it. The final image of Rodney, the team, and Ultimus is beautiful.
