Offshoot fandoms

Want to know one of the things I like most about writing in new fandoms?1 It's easy to keep track of canon.2 Four episodes into a tv show, there are no huge arcs and mind-boggling timeline and endless lists of secondary characters to keep a track of. When you're writing multiple fandoms, and you have a memory as slippery as mine, that's a huge ( Read more... )

in fact her personality changed noticeably (to me) by the time she made it to Atlantis

As well as her hair color. :-)

I think that "it depends" is probably a good answer. I couldn't imagine writing Torchwood fic involving Jack without getting a better grounding in Dr. Who, but I don't see why one couldn't write e.g. Gwen/Owen or teamfic. I did see just the McKay clips from SG-1, but I don't think those are necessary - it's more like they provide extra background. (Like the piano stuff.)

Hee, I think someone should write the story explaining her hair/face/personality transplant!

Yes, a good point. I'd feel reasonably confident about writing Rhys, or Gwen, but not so much Jack. Or even Ianto, given that he has a background with an earlier version of Torchwood, and I'm still hazy on the set up of it all.

The more I've learnt about comics, the more complicated they seem! I think movieverse versions of comics are a whole lot easier to deal with - as you say, more coherent and consistent.

I'm actually glad I rewatched Rodney's introduction on SG-1, as, while I'd agree that he was shockingly annoying in them, more of a caracature than a fleshed out character, there were little things that I'm glad to have seen just in order to know him that little bit better, and to avoid mistakes. Mind you, if the writers/prop people couldn't decide on his full name, it does make canon errors in fanfiction a little less reprehensible! *g*

You know, I don't think the SGA writers pay that much attention to SG1 canon. Heck, at this point? I don't think the SG1 writers pay that much attention to SG1 canon. I just try not to screw up things like "What is a wormhole?" and don't worry (too much) about the rest. :-)

Heh, I just mentioned to someone else about Rodney's name - seems like the props people and the writers didn't get together on that one! Which reminds me of Buffy - I'm fairly sure we saw three different birthdays onscreen for her! I rather think we're less forgiving in fanfiction at times though. Or maybe that's just me. *g*

I insists on having as much background as possible. If I hadn't already been into SG-1, I would probably still be catching up instead of writing SGA.

OTOH, I know just enough about classic Doctor Who to know that the current series have changed history, so I feel comfortable writing Torchwood (but not Who itself) having only seen a couple of series in the '80s and the new ones.

And that's why I won't write movie canon for comics (or future-Smallville): There's too much research to do, and research = money I don't have.

I find that research is something I have to do for most fandoms I write in - not canon research, but American culture/travel/etc type research. I actually wrote a British fandom story today, set in a hospital, and it was so blissfully easy - I work in a hospital, and there was no pausing for half an hour to go and research something, no blank lines to be filled in when I had the time to do the research. I do often wish it weren't necessary, but I guess it's the price I pay for wanting to write in fandoms set in worlds so far from my own.

Torchwood I fancy writing for the fun of writing Cardiff dialect - I'd longing to read a story that plays on the Welshness of the setting and characters, but I guess most of the writers in the fandom don't know Cardiff well enough to use it.

As for SGA, I think it would be hard to write in without at least a working knowledge of SG-1, especially with the crossover episodes. And the more background detail you have at your fingertips, the better really.

Oh, real life research is a whole different discussion, there. I'm petrified of writing more Torchwood because of dialect issues; I'm not even sure if the one I did write is okay.

As it is I try to stick to writing about places I've been. Luckily I've done a lot of travelling.

I write James Bond fic -- specifically, Goldeneye fic. I've seen all of the Brosnan!Bond movies, as well as several of the other Bond movies, including the new one. Though I've taken a few things from the rest of the canon, I've been treating the other Bonds as if they're kind of AU -- since they go back to the 60s, and the books are definitely a different universe. It's the only way to have a coherent, manageable base to work from. Since the universe seems to reboot every time they bring in a different actor, I feel entirely justified in this.

There's actually a whole comm devoted to Goldeneye slash -- um, I didn't mention it was slash, did I? -- well anyway, it's slash.

The community is forengland and I'd reccomend not leaping into the middle of my ginormous epic WIP; anything by Iolana Khenemet or Guede Mazaka or Lanna Michaels will be good. Especially Lanna's Not to Be (http://lannamichaels.livejournal.com/49232.html) which is a painful kick in the emotions. The master list of fics is here: http://community.livejournal.com/forengland/44923.html . Off the site but linked to it is Hecate's Easy ( http://www.yuletidetreasure.org/archive/10/easy.html ) which is probably one of the best standalone fics in the fandom. I could rec more, but I should be leaving for work NOW and I'm still not dressed. Enjoy!

It's okay! I like slash, a lot.

Thank you. I'll be amused for ages.
