Hello Does anyone know whether there is a demonstration in support of the right of the Union speakers' freedom of speech going on tonight, and where it might be meeting?
I've seen plenty of posters up and around town questioning the right of Griffin and Irving to speak! And promises of demonstrations against them, police threats &c &c. That constitutes questioning if you ask me...
But it's not about free speech. It's about their invitation to a private body. The two issues are separate - I think they should have as much right as anyone to spout their hate on Speaker's Corner etc without being given legitimacy by a Union invitation.
That said, I don't know of any demo, but hope you have a good night and come to no harm.
You asked a question, I answered it. I have heard of no demonstration in favour of them speaking, apart from the one which I am given to understand (but have not checked) was publicised on the Stormfront messageboard.
Given that this means there are likely to be people whose main hobby is being Nazis hanging around the centre of town, the advice not to look ethnic is pretty important. You may not need it, others probably do.
Still, the Oxford Union have managed to get David Irving (who dropped out of a Physics degree) described as an 'academic and historian' on the BBC Website, so I'm sure they must be very pleased with themselves.
