Quick catch-up

As of a fortnight ago, I am again gainfully employed. Yay. I'm 1/3 of the 3-person web team at the same notable New England liberal arts college that digitalemur works at. It's kept me sorta busy for the past couple weeks, which is why I didn't post sooner. For those in the Valley who don't know where digitalemur works, it's Daphne ( Read more... )

Well, congrats to you, Mr. Employed Man! I hope Daphne treats you better than Scooby-Doo did. (Or is it Shaggy? I've heard the story told different ways.)

I think we were at Scooby. Shaggy's the stoned one.

Apparently, there's also some confusion about exactly which schools Daphne and Velma represent. I mean the older of the two. It's all ridiculous urban legend anyway; the newest of the five colleges wasn't founded until after the TV show was on the air.

Of course, that may mean there's a deeper archetype at work. Hmmm.

Well, that's where the Scooby/Shaggy confusion comes in. When the series was created, there were only four colleges. The variations of the urban legend that take that into account claim that the schools were based on the human characters, with Scooby being non-representational. A floating signifier, if you will.

As to the Daphne/Velma confusion, I think that's based on whether you try to classify Velma based on her mathematical prowess or her assumed latent sexuality. If you stick with Daphne, I think the answer is clearer. Which one's arm and arm with Fred and which one is sequestered behind the mountain?

Scooby as foating signifier or Scooby as populist, everyman, fuckup?

Even a good analogy has a breaking point.

Sequestered behind the mountain, or or sequestered across the river? Four of the five colleges are on Route 116, in adjacent towns; only three of them are on Route 9.

One of the sisters is the socialite, in the center of the "scene", and one is the bookish social worker, quietly doing good.

One is a (potential) lover for Fred, one is more sister-ish (and possibly lesbian).
