Before I start, can anyone tell me how to make entries show up in the default LJ style rather than the journal style

To answer your initial question!

Go to:
Journal
Customize Journal
Customize your theme
Under 'Basic Options,' where it says "Disable customized comment pages for your journal" select Yes instead of No.

Then, whenever you go to someone else's journal and their entry is in a journal style that hurts your eyes, you can always type up ?style=mine at the end of the URL.
