This site shows a good example of how they catch 'em for all those who are curious. ;) Our lady didn't use a net though, she just reached in the cage and caught her mid-flight. They calm down a bit after a while but their tiny litle hearts keep a racin.' :)
Also I'm terrible and I have't sent your Christmas present yet. Xo Gale got sick after Christmas and I was busy for a week being a nurse and I didn't have much time to spare. But it's all ready to go so it'll be on it's way soony. It's nothin' huge.. just a lil' something to make you smile. :)
This site shows the kind of trap they use. It's a little cage that's big enough to house a feeder. You put it up in a place they frequent and when they come to take a drink you press a button and a little remote controlled arm drops the door closed. It's really pretty slick to see in person! And yeah... they're a little stressed by it but the banders are gentle professionals and the whole process takes under 5 minutes or less. :)
How absolutely marvelous! Sure, we know about migration and food source memory in our heads, but it's another thing entirely to see it in person! And speaking of seeing fun things in person, this Sunday I wore my Owly fleece hat to the Chargers-Titans playoff game! It was rainy and cold (well, by San Diego standards, anyway), but I was delightfully toasty the whole game. The Chargers won, so it must have brought good luck! I also got head pats/tuft tweaks as well as high-fives when we scored touchdowns- we all know Owly is irresistible! :D
Yeah it's not possible without technology unless they're hurt. This site shows the cage and if you do a google web or image search for "Hummingbird Trap" you'll find some more. :) But anyway you slice it, it's absolutely amazing. :)
