It's not so long ago that you'd have to watch who you told in the States, let alone somewhere as culturally opposite as Uganda. There's plenty of places still that you wouldn't want to discuss your sexuality, even locally to you I'm sure. Move to the Sudan and you'd face enough 'lashes' to kill you just for wearing trousers in public. Large parts of the world aren't enlightened, and sadly religion is often responsible for the suppression of rights, be they for women, gays, or any minority. I'm sure there are still large organisations in the US calling for sodomites to be put to the sword.
Of course it's wrong, but when a 'civilised' country like the US still has a sizeable minority (majority?) that's happy to go gay-bashing, it's impossible to hope that a 3rd world country like Uganda could be more liberated or tolerant.
How many openly gay politicians do you have over there yet?

Today didn't help. After I heard the word "fag" used at the lunch table in the breakroom, I just went back into my office and shut the door.
And people wonder why I eat my lunch sequestered in my office.

(from http://equalitygiving.org/Gay-Politicians)
* Only two members US House of Representatives are openly gay: Barney Frank (D-MA) and Jared Polis (D-CO)
* Only one member of the US House of Representatives is openly lesbian: Tammy Baldwin (D-WI)
* No members of the US House of Representatives are openly bisexual or transgender
* No members of the US Senate are openly LGBT, although several are believed to be in the closet and vote against pro-equality legislation
* 20 states do not have an openly LGBT member of the State Legislature
More depressed now.
