EVEN PRINCES HAVE FEARS
Merlin made his way through the long winding corridors of the castle towards the prince’s chamber, humming a happy tune. It was early morning and he was due to wake the prince up and bring him his breakfast. Merlin had just greeted another servant that past him when he suddenly heard an ear piercing shriek coming form the direction of the prince’s chambers. Fearing that there was something terrible wrong, he bolted towards his prince and what ever danger he was facing.
Rounding the corner, he found Arthur standing a few meters from his open chamber doors. He was just stood there staring. Whatever it was must be in the Princes chambers Merlin approached him slowly and was surprised to find him deathly pale, eyes goggling, staring at his door.
Merlin gently placed a hand on Arthur's arm, worried he might startle the frightened man “Arthur?” He asked softly “what is it, what’s wrong?”
Arthur pointed a shaky finger, “the…the…there above the bed…”
Merlin made his way cautiously towards the chamber door feeling his magic prickle in his fingertips, ready do use at a moments notice to save his beloved prince from whatever danger awaited him. He reached the door and peered inside. Nothing seemed to be out of place (well no more than usual). The only thing that didn’t belong there was a spider, sitting just above the wood of Arthur’s headboard. Merlin gingerly checked behind both doors before peeking under the bed (just in case) before his gaze returned to the spider on the wall. Merlin’s brow furrowed, was that what had frightened Arthur so badly? he shook his head, can’t be.
Merlin walked from the room and looked at the price, still stood there staring. He pointed into the room,
“is…the spider the problem?” He asked, sure the prince would berate him and tell him not to be and idiot.
“Yes.” The prince spat through gritted teeth.
Merlin blinked, He couldn’t believe what he was hearing, hang on this is Arthur right? Arthur who fights Knights, Arthur who fights bandits. And fought a bloody great fire breathing Dragon. He’s afraid of a…a spider? Merlin thought, but the only thing that came out of him mouth was “seriously?”
Arthur growled and balled his fists at his sides “You have one of those blasted things crawling up your body when you’re a baby and can’t do a thing about it, and tell me you won’t develop a morbid fear of the things!” Arthur yelled. “Just….” He waved a finger in the general direction of the bed, “get rid of it.”
Merlin nodded, “yes sire.” Walking up to Arthur’s bed and gently coaxed the spider into his hand. He smiled down at the creature sitting seemingly comfortably in his palm, “imagine you scaring a big brave prince eh? Come on; let’s get you out of here.” Making his way over to the window, he opened it and shook the spider onto the outside of the windowsill, watching it crawl down the wall before closing the window firmly.
Then he walked back to Arthur.
“All gone.” He smiled.
Arthur nodded, and holding his head high, walked into the bedroom like nothing had happened. However, once they were inside, Arthur closed the doors firmly and rounded on Merlin, his fore finger pointed directly in Merlin’s face. “No one must know about this.” Arthur said quietly and deliberately, “am I understood?”
Merlin nodded placating and smiled “yes sire.”
With that, he turned got busy doing his chores but he couldn’t keep the huge smirk off his face. Maybe Gaius was right after all, Thought Merlin even the bravest of warriors have fears.
The End.
