Results like this make me wonder if the 'right' to a trial by jury should be waivable in criminal cases.

Well, I would have to say that in some cases it'd be damn hard to find an impartial jury. Still, they should have at least gotten convicted on something - firing 50 rounds is excessive.

Oh, there's nothing that would guarantee a jury choosing conviction, but the state playing prosecution, defense, judge, and jury all at once....--I don't think there's any other word but theater for it
