How many of you still celebrate those little holidays from back home?

[PRIVATE TO CASTIEL]

I sent someone your way. I don't know that she made it, but just in case you end up with an orphan at your door, it's best to let her in.

Christmas goose and witch burnings. 'Though in the new world, it tends towards Butterball and good old-fashioned fag drags.

[Yes, that was a drawl on the last two words. She watches South Park, okay.]

[Lucifer is absolutely silent for a long minute. There have been other demons to stand up to him in the past--always in a show of bravado, or because they were underestimating him due to his generally calm, affable nature.

That isn't the case with Sonja. She's well aware that he could kill her, and she prizes herself above her life. So few beings understand that, but Lucifer does. Of course he does. Without that same top priority, he never would have started the War.]

Hm.

[He turns away, hands clasped behind his back, as he mulls this over further.]

But you do understand you are an employee--not a partner. Don't you?

An employee with rights and one hell of a union.

A subcontractor.

But I don't take pointless orders when the only purpose they serve is trying to assert dominance.

[Her willing, loyal obedience is earned. Not gotten by force.]

There's only been one order with that as a motive, and this one wasn't it.

If you're going to keep working for me, you need to understand that I do things for a reason. You have shown yourself willing to do things even when they're dangerous to you--such as the attack on the city. I have no reason to try to grind you down, Sonja, and I don't want to have to do that. You need to stop assuming that I want the same thing everyone in your realm did.

[Wait. He- may have a point.

Whatever. Moving on.]

Trying to make me squirm doesn't count as a good reason. And if that's one of your reasons, even one of many, then this employee's walking off the line.

There may be times you have to do things you would rather not. But I can guarantee they will never involve me handling you the way other superiors in your world would.

[Meeting his eyes evenly.]

I would be suicidal or a fool to take a superior at his word. Ever.

If you keep making assumptions about my motives and balking at tasks that are for your own good, well. That's suicidal.

[Still giving him that sour, closed-off look.]

I have no reason to trust you. In billions of years, I have never had reason to trust anyone.

I don't trust you, or my brothers, or anyone else either, Sonja. I'm not asking you to give me your heart.

But I don't work with those I can't collaborate with, and if every time I tell you what needs to be done you fly back to "I can't trust you" and refuse to do it, then no. You're no employee, or subcontractor, you're just where I get blood.

If you melt down like a teenager every time I dig in my heels, this isn't a collaboration. It's an unhealthy marriage.

Except you dig in your heels over everything. I'm not going to waste my time coaxing you every time I need something to get done.

I've resisted maybe three times.

[You fucking baby.]
