Overalls? Not too good for hiding growing baby bumps. Ivy has learned this already. That doesn't change the fact that it's about the most comfortable thing she can wear right now ( Read more... )

"Is everyone pregnant around here?" It's a declaration Edna feels needs to be made. Of course, this one looks much younger than the last. She smiles shyly at the girl, dancing on her toes a bit. "Congratulations, hun!"

"Yes, if you keep him or her." Having had a baby of her own, she just can't use the term 'it'. "It's going to be near impossible to let your baby go though. I'll warn you now, so make sure its what you must do before you decide."

"Well, it's not like I have any other option," Ivy says with a shrug. "Never had a job before, my parents sure as hell aren't going to help, Jason's dead, and I'm not even legal yet."

"You do, hun, there have been kids havin' kids since... well, it's not too common where I'm from, least no one talks about it out loud, but my Mama did it." She nods slowly. "You give up, and you get through. You're a lot stronger than you or anyone else gives you credit for, and there are people out there willin' to help, y'just gotta find 'em."

"Yeah. Guess so." She shrugs, awkwardly.

She's not used to thinking about keeping the ba-- it. Not even in the most tentative of terms.

Edna knows so, but she won't speak on it much more for now.

"Now you just got to worry about takin' care of yourself, hun. You ever need anything and I'm around, you just let me know, okay? I've been through havin a baby of my own, I know what to expect and what not to."

"Um... okay." Sheesh. So many sincere people here. What the hell is up with that?

She hesitates.

"Um, I wasn't... paying too much attention at the doctor's... is it weird that the fact my room smells like lemons makes me nauseous?"

Edna smiles warmly so glad to be able to help another person in some way. It's not often that she's come to for advice, only by Tracey and that's happening less and less as Tracey gets older. "No, not at all. When you're pregnant the oddest smells and foods will make you nauseas, and you might get really weird cravings too. No use denying them, just dig right in."

"Yeah?" Ivy smiles a little crookedly. "I thought I was insane for waking up a few nights ago wanting pepperoni pizza with cream cheese."

The narration, strangely, would like to try that.

This narration has tried chili and cheese cream as a dip, and is starting to think that cream cheese goes well with anything.

"No, not insane. Just pregnant. Why I once had Wilbur make me pork and cover it in jelly." Edna smiles warmly in return. "You should try it, the next time you get a weird craving. Whatever it is. Pretty soon they'll become too hard to ignore."

"Cool." Well, that's something fun. Food. Food is good.

Even if this whole thing is awful and hard and scary.

Edna looks at her sadly, as though she's just realized something.

"Really, honey, you don't have anyone to talk to about this in your life?"

Ivy looks down and picks at the leg of her overalls and mumbles something that approximates to "No."

"Oh, dear, not even your momma or nothin?" Edna's gently petting Ivy's hair in the way that she often does with her own daughter. She can't help it! Being pregnant is hard enough without having to go through it alone!

Really, Ivy wouldn't normally let anyone pet her hair. But... well, she had been wanting her mom. A lot. And her mom was so... well, wanting nothing to do with her.

She shakes her head. "Kicked me out. Staying with my.... friend, Nadia, and her folks. They're not exactly the attentive type."

"Oh, honey." Edna says quietly, looking almost like she might cry for the poor girl. "Come here."

And she doesn't even give Ivy the choice, she just wraps her thick arms around the girl in a warm hug. Yeah, just try forcing your way out of an Edna hug (not possible).

Two hugs in two days. It's a record for Edna.
