Jean was busy in the kitchen area of his apartment, fixing a sandwich for a late supper. He'd been reading and had lost track of the time ( Read more... )

Roy had meant to stop by sooner, but paperwork can be so time consuming... He didn't think Havoc would appreciate getting a knock on his door at one in the morning.

He reaches the apartment door and raps on it tightly.

As Havoc suspected, Riza had briefed him on the conversation in the bar, as well as her earlier conversations with him, including when she pointed out that his injury wasn't necessarily preventative toward still being part of the unit, and that they still needed him, and that he told her he'd think about it.

Of course, she hadn't told Roy about his parting verbal shots, or how she felt about the situation, just that she was concerned about Havoc.

She stood behind Roy, slightly off to the right, and waited quietly for Havoc to answer, her expression unreadable.

Jean glances up from making dinner. An eyebrow rises as he looks at the door, he had a feeling he knew who it was. A moments temptation to pretend that he wasn't home, denied by far too many years of loyalty.

He sighed, taking a deep breath, attempting to lock down the negative feelings he had. "Who is it?"

Roy calls through the door, "It's Mustang. I have your lighter...Hawkeye's with me."

Roy gives a slight smile and a reassuring nod. This is progress; he's admitted there's a problem. He's admitted it's getting worse. What bothers Roy most is the fear. Could it be so big? But then why would he handle it alone? Was there no trust? Did he think Roy would abandon him once he had the truth? Did Havoc know him at all, or had he just forgotten?! Roy knows he has said some harsh things and passed difficult orders, but always for the sake of progress, for himself, his men, the country. He isn't going to leave any person out. He isn't going to leave a man behind. It's his duty if not his right.

Roy places a strong hand on Jean's shoulder. "Then there's hope." Just let us help you...

The hand landing on his shoulder causes Jean to look up at Mustang. He thinks for a moment, before nodding his head. He doesn't say anything, though he has knows Mustang wants more, he just has no idea to where to start or how to begin to explain exactly what's going on his head right now.

Riza watches the two men, remaining silent, her expression calm if a bit worried, sympathetic.

Roy waits for Jean to speak, but he seems too lost among his thoughts. Roy asks, "How long has it been like this?" He still doesn't fully understand the roots of the problem, but if Havoc is hesitant and needs some direction, it's probably better to start with the simple questions.

Jean looks back at Mustang. There are reasons to he keeps the doubts and fears to himself, he doesn't want to hurt his friends by doubting them.

"Just...just keep telling me that, I can be a stubborn idiot at times..." and I want to believe you about this, I just don't know I can shove these doubts aside to do it.

The area where the wall met the ceiling was getting a close inspection, or it would have been had Riza's vision wasn't dangerously blurred. Slowly, she released a shaky breath and looked at him.

"You can be," she said, her voice thick as she managed to twist her lips into a hint of a smile. The smile faded and the thick sound of her tone turned strained as she worked to keep it level. "We are not. Going. To leave you behind. However many times I have to tell you that to get that through your thick skull, I will. We still need you. Yes. We have another Lieutenant Havoc working with us. That does not change the fact that although he's familiar with us for the most part, he is still not the one who've seen every day, day in and day out for years, who knows us, who we have trusted our backs to, and finally, forget about the military. You're forgetting that you're also. Our. Friend. We do not leave our friends ( ... )

Roy is surprised by Riza's voice. She'd been so silent the entire visit. He supposes she just couldn't hold it in anymore. As she speaks he keeps his eyes turned toward Havoc, though he's not really seeing. He's focused on her words but can't turn to look at Riza in her upset. He can already hear it in her voice, and to see her in distress could cause him to lose what little cool he has left.

Roy is smiling sadly by the close of Riza's speech. He focuses back on Havoc. "Jean, the other...he'll never be the man you are. He may share your rank but not your experiences, and I don't even base this friendship around the military or the assignments. You've shown faith in me and that's enough. Unless you can convince me otherwise, I'm not giving up on you."

Jean looks at Hawkeye as she speaks, the strain to keep the emotion out of her voice is like a punch in the gut. She would never be upset like this if his doubts in them were true.

When Mustang speaks, Jean focuses on him, as Mustang agrees with Hawkeye. It's a relief to hear, that they value him as friend, not a former comrade. He nods, the only words that come to mind, don't seem like enough, but he finds they fit the best.

"Thank you" he says softly as he looks at them. He's relieved and grateful they're not going to leave him; slightly confused, because he would understand if hey did choose. He's also feeling slightly ashamed of doubting them, but mostly relieved and grateful.
