[For Kaylee]

Dec 04, 2008 22:46

Robin had enjoyed the dinner and the company and was hopeful that despite her recent mopiness, Kaylee had too. She looked marginally more cheerful as they wandered along the beach in the direction of his home and though he considered asking about the tradition that had earned him an invite he thought perhaps it might bring up memories of home and ( Read more... )

Kaylee was very glad Robin had been there - it’d been difficult who to decide would like to come aboard Serenity - but in the end she decided she got along best with Robin, and really seeing as the holiday was called Thanksgiving she ‘sposed it fit kinda well that she was thankful for him to saving her from a Tiger. Even if she had cried when he brought her the animal's beautiful soft striped pelt. She had eaten a little of the ..interesting dinner, and her stomach was not so full but the company had been a lot of fun, and she had a faint smile as she made footprints in the sand having gone without shoes. Robin’s tease brought her grin wider in amusement. “You ain’t wrong.” She was clearly imagining the prospect of walking between Robin’s home and her's all night. “How ‘bout we say I owed you fer Halloween n’now we’re square.” She grinned, trying not to laugh at the reminder of tiny, very sour little Robin. Though her silliness faded quickly, watching her feet as she walked. “Honest though? I’m awful glad you came.” Kaylee added ( ... )

"I'm never wrong," he advised her to her comment and he pulled a face at the mention of Halloween. "I think we can call it square only when we agree never to mention that day ever again." He'd only gotten crosser that day until Kaylee had felt the need to pick his shrunk self up and he didn't think it best to dwell on that. (Or the tantrum he had had.) He is observant enough to catch the shift in mood if somewhat at a loss as to how to fix it - her situation is as hopeless as his in a complete different way. "I was glad to," he said. "Really I do not often turn down meals," he teased, "nor would I ever decline your company Kaylee." He has trouble seeing how anyone could really, she's normally such a light hearted soul and it makes it all the worse to see her like this. It was worse than her obvious distress when he gave her the tiger skin (which he had thought a rather nice present.) But they are soon enough at his house- which is not quite camouflaged - Robin does not have Will's skill. And even if it was hidden the deer would always ( ... )

"You gotta deal." Kaylee assures - she had fun, being a child had somehow lightened her heart and lifted a weight from her. She wasn't used to feeling this lead weight on her chest all the time - pining for someone is a whole lot different from mourning their loss and it's worse now. Robin claimed it was all to do with food, and Kaylee looked dubious, her brows arched. "Well, if yer gonna turn down a meal someday guess you know which one to pick next time." Kaylee's heart was warmed by Mal's efforts, and she was happy - but the food was not the best, everyone knew that but enjoyed the day all the same. She was cheered by his assurance - friends were her family. The foresty, almost camouflaged sort of home is a curious change to living aboard the solid metal of Serenity - like a story sort of; and as Kaylee followed, she spotted a deer peering curiously at them. Kaylee made her way over, clicking her tongue and slowly offering her hand into the pen, trying to coax the animal closer.

"The food was -" Robin pauses thinking of a word that is both neither unkind nor untrue, "more edible than many meals I have had ." He grins, "no matter what people used to say there is really little that can be done for squirrel." He pulls a face at the memory before watching her approach Much, the deer is used to people now and less nervous since Robin moved away from the Starks and their wolves. Much makes it obvious where the expression doe eyed comes from looking hopefully at Kaylee as Robin informs her, "don't pay any attention to that look, I left food before I went out." He might have something to offer Kaylee though and he ducks into the house to find the bottle of brandy that he was gifted out what he suspects was pity - but brandy is brandy and at the time arguing with the pirate girl had not been a priority.

“Oh well when you put it that way- had my share of those too, behin’ honest.” Worse meals, most meals were worse. Protein wasn’t that palatable generally speaking, but it was a staple even before Serenity, even disguised as cake it wasn’t so spectacular. Kaylee winced a little to the thought of squirrel, teeth gritting. “Ain’t no squirrel though.” Chewy comes to mind. The deer creeps a little closer and sniffs her hand, looking wide-eyed between the two humans, Robin assuring it’s been fed. “You ain’t missed out on anything special anyway.” She assured the noble looking creature, trying to get close enough to stroke it’s neck. Robin’s gone a moment, only to reappear with a bottle of something. “What’s that?” She asks curiously, mildly distracted by the deer as it ambles away to another part of the pen and Kaylee abandons trying to stroke it.
