Oh for the love of everything! They had to interrupt his snuggle-time with Azkadellia and Eliza for something that, in his opinion, could have waited until the next morning. 'Urgent!' they told him. 'Must be done tonight!' they said. God damn those useless, good-for-nothing messenger boys, guards, and everything else associated with this damn institution. Why the bloody hell would he have to get away from his Azzy and Eliza to sign a damn paper? Was it that freaking important ( ... )

Slater glared at the stupid kid. "It's ten pm. Five year olds are up at this hour."

"Oh are they?" He glared right back. "Go find a damn five year old to help you find your way then." Jeb crossed his arms, gave the man another glare, rolled his eyes and walked on past him, bumping his shoulder on his way.

Who the hell did this idiot think he was?

"The business of government doesn't stop because little Jeb Cain is tired. Aw! Does he want his blankie? Do yourself and the new government a favour, kid. Go back to the ditch you came from." Shooting things was easy. He's bound to disappoint anyone who puts his trust in him. "Maybe you just let your daddy take care of the grown up stuff."

No. No, this isn't the way palace security worked. Sorry, asshole. Jeb knew his dad would kick his ass if he let some suspicious man threaten the well-being of Jeb himself and insult Az on top of that without being at least taken in for questioning.

Perhaps... Perhaps Jeb was a little too cautious, a little too paranoid, but the idiot hit a sore spot. Hell, the idiot grabbed that sore spot, tore it apart and rubbed some salt into it.

When he was knocked off balance, he did his best to quickly aim his gun again, back at the man's back. He couldn't shoot him in the back, morals called against that...

"Sir, if you won't go with me right now..." The man went on his way. "Guards!" There was bound to be some around, or Jeb was about to feel very stupid for raising his voice to call that out. "Whatever you know, we'll figure it out. That would be what questioning is generally used for," he stated quietly with a hint of clear sarcasm.

"Certainly not, Diefenbaker. You'll get fat." Dief barked. Ellie continued to lift the plate out of his reach, determined to at least find a maid, so Dief wouldn't be tempted.

Slater outright grinned at his target. "Hello, El. Long time."

Ellie dropped the plate. "SLATER!" Dief gave a token bark before licking the remains of that apple cake.

"He wanted to see you, that's how the hell he ended up here. I don't want to deal with him any more than you seem to," Jeb pointed out, eyes firmly locked on the other man, who proceeded to identify himself as vaguely as humanly possible in the situation.

"We'll get through what, exactly, Lady Ellie? This man is now under arrest, as far as I'm concerned, and he will be the one doing the talking, not us." Maybe they should arrest her too, for good measure, or at least question her. She knew the idiot, after all. He couldn't help but be slightly suspicious of her too.

"Security is tight. Dad wouldn't let any shit slip out of the castle, especially not shit like him. Clearly he's the one who's got a lot to say, and he'll be saying it."

Jeb, where did all this self-confidence come from? He felt threatened and found himself in a leadership position here, he'd needed to take some sort of command.

The response given to the straight forward question was not one that Johnson was willing to hear. Like all the other guards, he had been repeatedly briefed about pumped up security in the Palace. The hows, the whys and the whats. There was no room for errors or leeway, not in the case of unidentified men, women or creatures. Not if he/she/they could be construed as threats the the welfare of the Palace's occupants.

"Hands behind your back and turn around," he ordered without a single shred of gentleness or patience. Johnson had his duty to do, and he would fulfill it to the best of his ability. The set of handcuffs clipped to the back of his belt were pulled out of their case and clicked open.

There would be no argument in this case. And if there were, he would not listen. This unidentified suspect would be brought to higher ranked authorities and dealt with from there. Even if it did mean more paperwork to fill out.

"His 'escaping' isn't what concerns me," Ellie replied gravely. "And how is Ev treating you?" Ellie asked, loud and clear.

Slater smirked at her and shrugged. "Not too bad, got promoted a while back. Ambassador to the O.Z."

Oh Ev. OZ's relations with Ev were tense enough that one infringement as this one would not exactly do much anyway, as far as Jeb could think. Besides, ambassador or no, whatever the hell this man was, he had no right to threaten the well-being of royalty, their respective fiances or the land of the O.Z.

The man continued to almost blatantly ignore Johnson, and Jeb was slightly amused.

"If you can prove that post with a document signed by the King himself," which he was hoping the man didn't have somehow handy, "your word means nothing to us." He couldn't remember anyone from Ev ever mentioning anything about sending a new ambassador to OZ... Wasn't theirs still alive and well? Or had that frog-count been the previous ambassador? Jeb was starting to strongly dislike Ev.
