As a counter maneuver Cain had to admit this one was good. Annoying as hell, but that WAS the point after all ( ... )

Ahamo had done his own greeting when they had convened in the room moments before he had stepped out. Sirua had pressed her forehead to his, in the way of her people. Chosovi had nodded slowly, once, before smiling. Ithel had clasped the Prince Consort's arm each gripping the forearm of the other, patting the other on the back. Grainne held out one hand, palm side up, which Ahamo placed his right hand beneath, also palm side up. Oaxaca required that her forearm, which she held up crossed in front of her chest, be met by his own ( ... )

He almost winced at the 'Lord' bit. That was gonna chafe for a while.

Seating, right. He could do this. His Tin Man training came to aid him slightly in this case. He tended to take in everything about a room when he entered. Including noting the seating. Figuring out where people sat felt like one of those tests he'd taken in the Academy as well.

If B is near C and C is near F, than where is A?

Then there was the trick the Mystic Man taught him about eating when there were 20 utensils. Watch what everyone else did and follow suit.

Hang back and wait for the others to sit if you weren't sure.

He was fairly sure where he'd be sitting, anyway. But fairly sure wasn't certain.

He knew everyone had to sit at the same time so no one was considered 'above' anyone else. So he'd have to take position when everyone else did. So he'd watch who went in what direction.

Everyone settled into their seats with practiced ease, in their accustomed places. It had been fifteen annuals since they had sat down at the same table, the same day in fact that had silently changed all of their lives. Their last meet had taken him away from his family, long enough for evil to slip out of its prison and infect his eldest daughter ( ... )

Ellie had received word that the tribes had gotten to the palace. Well, actually, she woke up that morning to find her room filled with members of the Nenet tribe.

Evidently, they found the rooms assigned to them to be a bit off putting. Ellie apologised profusely for being such a reluctant host. Oaxana apologised herself, she hadn't realised how cramped her room was.

Ellie looked around, she was still in the servants' quarters, and shrugged. "It serves me." Usually, when there wasn't a tribe camping in there.

She changed in the closet before heading off to work, promising the tribe that she'll see them later.

Ellie apologised, out of habit, when two small, fast moving objects hit her and knocked her over.

"Big people! Big feet!" one of them muttered.

"Well, I'm sorry," she apologised. "But generally, running through the palace is not recommended."

The Munchkins glared up at her. "Who are you?"

"I'm Ellie. And who might you be?"

They looked at her as if she was an idiot. "I'm Tersa," the woman sneered. "He's Nattapong. From 'Behind the Magic'? Perhaps you've heard of us."

"No, I'm afraid I haven't. May I ask why you're here?"

"The Five Nations," Tersa was getting impatient.

"Well, I'm afraid the press conference isn't until twelve and it is currently eleven."

"We're investigative reporters!" Nattapong protested. "We investigate! We look behind the scenes!"

"Well, an admirable sentiment," Ellie agreed. "But I'm afraid, I cannot allow you into what is a sensitive discussion."

"Do you work here?" Tersa asked, suspicious.

"Yes."

"Look, maybe next time you meet that boss of yours, Cain, you could give him a message," Tersa suggested.

"I'd be happy to relay any messages you might have."

"It's about Zero." She was surprised when Ellie suddenly stopped.

Ellie had schooled her face to reveal nothing. "Zero? What about him?"

"Maybe we should discuss that with Cain," Nattapong retorted.

Ellie seemed to back off. "Certainly. Of course, Zero is very dangerous. As you are no doubt aware. People, innocent people, could very well be hurt."

In the hands of others, that may have sounded trite. But Ellie was perfectly sincere and earnest so Tersa and Nattapong found themselves starting to feel guilty for keeping it secret this long.

"Well, it's not been confirmed or anything... but our sources ( ... )
