Anyone care to tell me how Nevil wound up with the sword when it was made off with by a goblin? Did I somehow miss a chapter or a paragraph that said the Sword of Gryffendor would always return to Hogwarts . . . In which case, how in hell did Nevil wind up with the sword . . . did it just happen to be laying around and he went, "ooo, shiney!" The sword has to be won, so . . . how did Neveil get the sword?

DundundunDUNH! Have no fear! Courtney, uber geek is here!
Silly goblin, was wrong Godric Gryffindor did not still the sword and as such there was some magical connection between the hat and the sword as we saw in Book 2. Neville, the true Gryffindor that he is asked for help, out popped the sword and SWISH when Nagini's head. Proving once and for all that Neville was a true Gryffindor and totally fucking awesome. Muhahahaha!
Now if only he wasn't a fictional character so I could marry him...

Possible...but goblins believe that payment for a goblin made item is only "renting" said item. The true owner is the creator, but you are right, the sword could very well have come out of the hat. Let me check the book . . . oops,
Silly me . . . it appears that is exactly what happened: "Neville broke free of the Body-Bind Curse upon him; the flaming hat fell off him and he drew from its depths something silver, with a glittering, rubied handle..."

I'm totally cheesed off. Snape was one of my idols.

The story was predictable, but her getting from point A - Z was interesting. She has really developed as a writer since the first book.
