It didn't make me an atheist/ agnostic, but I'm sure I wouldn't be as high as I am without various run-ins with well-meaning but cringe-making Scripture Union/ Christian Union types...

That sort of thing does me too. "My Daughter the Theologian" who is very forthright, hard-line and nearly as old-fashioned in her views as I am tends to take the line that they are not in fact Christian as they tend to be plug ignorant when it comes to the New Testament. She said once she didn't get what they saw in an iconoclastic Sabbath-breaker who hung out with lowlives, provided enough booze in his first miracle to make a party really go with a zing, was more easy-going about gays than widows who remarried and didn't even say anything about infanticide, never mind abortion.
