Further to all the fascinating comments on yesterday's post, I think this that I posted some while back covers most of the bases as regards my own position.

Except that I forgot to mention the almost certainly counter-productive interventions of a Holy Roller schoolmate (I can hardly say friend), whom I also encountered through various Free Church ( Read more... )

I am trying furiously to recall who, when asked by a holy roller in an Edinburgh street "Have you found Jesus?" replied "Where did you lose him?"

comedy-curate stereotypes - this may have been the teeth

In a joke shop I once saw a packet of "Vicar's Teeth"...

It didn't make me an atheist/ agnostic, but I'm sure I wouldn't be as high as I am without various run-ins with well-meaning but cringe-making Scripture Union/ Christian Union types...

That sort of thing does me too. "My Daughter the Theologian" who is very forthright, hard-line and nearly as old-fashioned in her views as I am tends to take the line that they are not in fact Christian as they tend to be plug ignorant when it comes to the New Testament. She said once she didn't get what they saw in an iconoclastic Sabbath-breaker who hung out with lowlives, provided enough booze in his first miracle to make a party really go with a zing, was more easy-going about gays than widows who remarried and didn't even say anything about infanticide, never mind abortion.
