Following frankie_ecap's (and others) posts on this.

The oursin style rules:

Is it comfortable?

Is it clean?

Is it noticeably lacking buttons/is the hem coming down/how badly crumpled is it?

Is it practical? (for whatever the purposes of the day might be, be they going to a meeting or doing a site survey in dusty cellar or attic.)

Basic elements: jeans/trousers, ( Read more... )

I'm simpler than that - is it black?

The decision about shoes is more complex, and doesn't involve considerations of comfort.

Damn it, I feel discriminated against. My socks virtually never match and today I am wearing one pink one and one buttercup yellow one, as all else appears to be in the wash. So middle-aged archivist chic is therefore prescriptivist! Although the dusty-cellar waistcoats sound very splendid.

That is a look I could get behind, although with non-matching socks (they only match if I've recently robbed them off someone) and more dog hair.

The reason I hardly ever wear dresses, except really long skirts, is not that I particularly love trousers but that I can't feel comfortable in any shoes that aren't either trainers or boots. Ankle-length skirts look ok with boots, but anything shorter looks bloody silly.

Plus, these days, I have a scrawny ageing neck that needs covering, long sleeves for much the same reason and no waist to speak of... I'm beginning to see the advantages of a burka.

The middle-aged archivist look doesn't sound all that dissimilar to the late-twenties astrophysicist look (though I tend to prefer multicoloured cardigans rather than waistcoats, and green, brown or blue skirts are allowed too). I'm fairly certain that doesn't mean it's come into fashion, though. :-)

And I thought all female astrophysicists looked like Trillian fron HHGTTG!

Sorry to disappoint! I may not be representative, but I would guess that the average quantity of make-up and cleavage per real female astrophysicist is significantly lower (assuming you're talking about tv Trillian rather than the recent film version).

I was very careful not to see the film.
