Fetch me a sickbag. And several large cod.

Nirpal Dhaliwal (the former other half of Liz Jones, who also told the world more than anyone can have wanted to know about their menage in his columns) informs anyone who might be interested that he is so secure in his studly het masculinity that he can be quite comfortable with gay male friends, having snogged several ('beautiful and charismatic ( Read more... )

1) The stuff about the Apache Indian medicine man reminded me irresistably of Wayne's World II.

2) As for "divine effulgence of the feminine" all I can say is, "Mooncups!"

Alan Carr isn't camp? News to me...

Nirpal actually deserved Liz Jones, didn't he?

Not quite sure that snogging your gay chum is the best advert for your firm heterosexuality, but maybe I'm old-fashioned. I tried to imagine a straight woman writing like this about a lesbian friend, but it doesn't work.

*gets a cod out of her handbag*.

Divine effluence of women?

Divine effluence of women?

Sounds like an ad for perfume: 'In this little bottle, our team of skilled perfumiers have created the timeless divine effluence of woman'.

Whenever I hear "effluence" I am reminded of a campaign in Vermont. The Stow ski resort wanted to use treated waste water in snowmaking. Locals weren't thrilled with the idea of the spring runoff.

The successful bumpersticker: "Stow: Where the affluent meet the effluent."

Yes, I wanted to give Nirpal a slap. With the Tavener interview, I didn't get as far as that gem of transcendental codswallop before I gave up, but IMO, the mere mention of the Virgin Mary, especially by a man, is often an indication that nonsense about women is on the point of being talked.

but somehow when anyone starts talking about 'the divine effulgence of the feminine' I feel there's a disconnect from actual women.

When Tavener opens his mouth I generally feel that there is a disconnect from reality. Still, it's a small price to pay for his music.

Having spent more than a decade in the professional company of American Indians, I can state with some degree of certainty that such association has never yet caused me to experience "very strong dreams." *sigh* The romanticization of the other never gets old, does it?

Although I did have a weird dream last night where the baby turned into this giant white grublike thing and tried to eat me, but I expect that's just that he's still nursing an awful lot.
