If I'd read this in a novel, I'd have got the point at once

On my mind lately, for whatever reason, was an episode that took place very early on in the Slow-Motion Disastrous Relationship. Possibly because, well, if you'd seen it in a novel you'd have known at once that it had a deeper symbolic resonance.

*sigh* In my disastrous relationship, we kept losing the car. Once parked near the house, and it took us two hours to find it; once in San Francisco, late at night, and it was 2 a.m. before the cops found it for us (three hours after we'd begun looking for it). And I was, of course, wearing heels.

Oh, there were other signs. But -- yeah.

Howabout both of you consulting a map of Paris on your honeymoon, deciding where to go, agreeing, and then walking off in opposite directions.

Seriously.

He took me flying twice (he has a private pilot's license), but both times the weather turned foul and would keep us from reaching our intended destination. One time we ended up drenched and stranded far from home when rain forced him to land early.

He would only ever feed me anaemic salads of iceberg lettuce, red onion and some flavourless tomato. I'd be staying round his for a few days, get no breakfast, head into town to fend for myself whilst he was working, then have this nothing-you-could-call-a-dinner. Totally symptomatic of his complete disregard for my feelings/needs. Worst part is that the bastard could actually cook - one evening he made me a very nice vegi Thai curry thing.

Heh!

He told me about this new girl he had met and on the walk back to my apartment we saw a woman get hit by a car. As soon as he dropped me off at my place a tremendous thunderstorm started that lasted for the rest of the night. And yet I still tried to be "just friends" with him for three years.
