Barbara Hambly! Yes! I really wish I could write like that, with the obvious love of words and the filigree inventiveness on the surface and the bone-and-sinew rightness underneath.

Though I didn't manage to finish the Benjamin January one set in Mexico and haven't read any since; I think it's because the series sets off the same 'Oh, no, not fair on top of everything else!' feeling as Miles Vorkosigan getting landed with a shortened lifespan due to the events of Diplomatic Immunity.

One reason I admire Klein is her good breast/bad breast formulation, which I find incredibly useful.

I think that is such a strong formulation: just getting to that concept that the Absent Good Thing is seen as actively hostile made so much sense of various emotional tangles.
