A fascinating piece. I had known that Martin Bernal was the grandson of Sir Alan Gardiner as well as the son of J.D. Bernal, but not the details. It was simply fascinating to read about the woman who influenced and affected three generations of eccentric scholars.

I'm now in pursuit of a copy of her memoirs!
I probably ought also to look for a bio of Bernal - last year I read a biography of Dorothy Hodgkin, who also had a relationship with him, and he sounds highly relevant to what may be, once I get everything I'm currently committed to cleared, a whole new project.

Looks like his only biography is J.D. Bernal: A Life in Science and Politics.
