I feel that only the Provincial Lady could have done justice to my encounter this evening.

She sounds just like my future daughter-in-law.

It must be real fun to introduce these characters to others like themselves, then sit back and watch them interrupt each other.

I bet you have more readers than she has. :)

Whenever I have observed the spectacle of ME introduced to ME they simply don't notice and talk over each other or they compete. In competition, tradition seems to dictate volume and bollocks^Wbombast in the male and an intricate dance a la Ladies of Letters in the female. Funny or depressing depends on whether one has to maintain ongoing contact.

Unfortunately it was a smallish space; also, there were hardly any of the sex-n-gender history mafia there (I was surprised) so that I could excuse myself with 'Have to go and say hi to X' - Eminent Social Policy Historian was able to slide away to talk to one of their postgrads (we had been standing there listening to the Bore and trying not to roll our eyes).
