Well there was a time when it didn't look like LotR would ever get made, and it came out well - so hopefully The Hobbit will follow that precedent... *everything crossable crossed tightly*
Oh bugger! Totally understandable - a director of GdT's calibre can't sit around waiting forever for the money people to sort themselves out. Six years of mid-career for two films (which could still fall through) is just not wise.
December 2012 is only 18 months away - no director, no cast except Gandalf - not looking doable now.
Well not even Gandalf, strictly speaking - Ian is keen to come back, but not even he has actually been signed yet, so he may start working on something else in the meantime! Of course since Gandalf disappears for a good part of the story, they would have some leeway to work around any scheduling conflicts that might occur by the time they will finally be able to start filming.
That said, I'm sure they have shortlisted some actors for certain roles and will sign them the moment they get the greenlight. And have a new director...
Finally got into your LJ as my server wouldn't let me earlier for some reason!
Not promising news is it? I do hope these films get made but I'm beginning to wonder when this will be now. I'm useless at knowing which director would be suited to the task but let's hope one can be found.
Thanks, I had heard about this from a friend on Facebook. It's quite understandable the GDT has had to pull out and all we can do is hope that *someone* suitable is able to step into the breach when the time comes...
These delays are annoying and frustrating for everyone!

I certainly hope so too! Considering the history of the making of LotR, I guess we can be hopeful, even if things look rather bleak right now.
