Hi everyone! I'm currently in the process of re-doing my room and have downsized my bookcases, so I am considering figuring out a new way of storing my DVD/CDs because of limited space

Since the qaulity is the same, just rip them to an external hard drive. I did that and just packed up/sold all my DVDs. Now they take up no space, and with my apple tv I can watch them whereever.
It's not pretty, but keeping them in spindle/cakebox packages (like the ones you can buy with 10/20/50/whatever blank CDs for recording) is a way to keep a huge number in a small space, and you can always pop that into a pretty storage box.
Paperchase do nice boxes, or you could get some of their giftwrap and use it to cover any shoeboxes you have going spare...
I move every year or so, so carting around two boxes of DVDs just wasn't working. First, I used a CD book, but that a hassle to alphabetize, but recently, I had a friend give me a silver CD case similar to this: http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=LCD-104-PB&cat=MED . It looks pretty on my dresser, easy to alphabetize, you can usually lock them, and i don't have to worry about my CDs falling out or getting ruined, even if I drop the box (which you can't say the same for those IKEA boxes, or external hard drives). And they're very reasonably priced, too.
I use those boxes and love it. It really helps me organize my DVDs and it really helps with limited space. I know Wal-Mart has some boxes and the container store.
