I actually haven't tried many of the free services since I still have a Norton subscription free with the University. Though there seem to be plenty of options for when that runs out. Have you heard much in regards to Panda, AVG, or Avast? In addition, I don't think I've clicked on a single GoogleAd in my life (intentionally).
Haven't had any personal experience with any of Panda, AVG, or Avast, but good things are said about them on the internets. Take that as you will.
I tend to favor ClamAV, since it's nice and multiplatform and it's Free Software, too. Thus, it fits into my "Free whereever possible, Proprietary only when necessary" software policy.
You could, of course, save yourself all the virus hassles by switching to a better OS.
I like AVG for windows, but I've been using Comodo antivirus and firewall for the past few months (when I'm in Windows, that is!). It works pretty well and any company who's CEO responds to their message board is a winner with me! :) Really, if you have any problems, the leaders of the company will try to help you.
Funny, he had actually installed Comodo, but as far as I could work out, it was part of the problem and not part of the solution. Closed-source, too, so not a 'preferred' solution for me.
