This made me realise how rarely I read meta these days. Mainly, I think, because I just don't see it anymore - on LJ there would often be interesting meta posts in my fandoms but Tumblr doesn't really do meta all that much. I used to write meta-ish stuff myself occasionally but I avoid it now partly because Tumblr is pretty much the only place to get stuff noticed and once it's on Tumblr it's out of your control - no filters or f-lock so there's the probability of hundreds of strangers angrily telling you how wrong and stupid you are, which makes me want to not put stuff out there.
Or maybe it's just that the fandoms I am in at the moment don't really lead me to want to go searching for meta? I hope that there are still smart people writing it somewhere!
There is a lot of it out there - but I think you're right; we mostly find it as we follow an interest. That's how I bumped into some great meta writers.
And yes, it can get vitriolic. I suppose it's because people get so invested in a particular point of view. I'm guessing those that write it and stick with it are those who can best shrug away the wank. :)
