Exhausted

I have spent the weekend helping son #2 set up his first solo apartment. He's got a good job, found a nice place in the former carriage house of the most ornate pink mansion I have ever seen, but he's never had a place on his own, without roommates. It's the first place that's solely his, a home of his own making. I remember my first solo place. ( Read more... )

Yeah, the first on-your-own apartment is a rite of passage: the first time you have to live with no one else to blame for the state of things at home.

I remember my own first apartment: a studio near the Cleveland Circle T stop in Boston with a fabulous view of the alley between my building and the one on the corner. I managed to clog the toilet with the cap of a can of Niagara spray starch within a few weeks of moving in (yes, really), which was probably the most memorable thing that happened the whole eighteen months I lived there. I don't think I ever acquired any alcohol since my family were all teetotalers....

Solo living isn't always all it's cracked up to be. I lived alone for a year (twice, actually), and I was miserable both times. I'm one of those Myers-Briggs extroverts, and living alone pushes me in very negative directions.

My apartment was fairly tidy, in one case because I had hardly any furniture, in the other because I was away as often as possible to be with friends.

Ditto. I've lived alone and like it in some ways, but I'm an ENFJ, hard core, and need to have another human being around or I'll go batty.

I got lucky; I have a fully functional granny-flat that I live in at my parents house. With board being my only bill, I have a fabulous combination of 'at home' and 'self sufficient' which is a lovely stepping stone. I only really eat with my parents at dinner - if mum feels like cooking - otherwise everything is on me.

It's pretty cool. And I have no one to blame for my mess, except myself... and two toy poodles, a spastic kitten, and a lazy cat ... which get their share, haha!

The best bit, though... is that I still have my mummy to squish the spiders >_>

I bet you'd be the most awesome mom, both in general & for helping someone set up their first place. Everyone gets to be proud and have such a feeling of accomplishment -- the person with their own place & the parents for seeing their son on his own! :-)

Congrats!
