Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon

Dec 19, 2010 14:01

It's pissing down rain here. No other way to describe it. The back yard is a lake. The carpets are leopard-spotted with muddy dog prints. We are single-handedly keeping the Redlands Chem Dry in business. If it was snowing, I'd be out on my snow shoes or X-country skis by now. I do miss schussing around this time of year ( Read more... )

I'm English, and while 'cunt' is used as a derogatory term, I don't find it so deeply offensive as others clearly do. It's not a word I tend to use myself, but I've heard it applied to both men and women to imply that they are unpleasant idiots, often trying to enforce authority they don't have, or misuse authority they do have.

Hal said much the same. I think it strikes the ear of men and women differently, because of our experiences with it.

And I do apologize for making the broad assumption from your icon that you are male!

LOL!!

Because I'm not (male, that is). The icon is of Elladan and Elrohir, the sons of Elrond; because I love them :>)

Jay is simply my initial, short for Janet.

I'm female, from the north of England (i.e. near Manchester) and the c-word is definitely more offensive than any other obscenity when used aggressively. It depends on context. I wouldn't use it myself, except, perhaps, as an anatomical term(and I use most other obscenities to excess). Oddly, I've only ever heard it used by men, as an insult to other men (which increases the misogynistic element, in my view). It amuses me that to call someone a dickhead isn't considered that offensive.
"Twat" is a bit of a joke word that can be applied to any adult. "Bitch" isn't particularly insulting; I would even take it as a compliment under certain circumstances. But then, I'm generally considered too nice (despite my vocabulary).

Hal is orthogonal to the rest of us, in this as in much else. In my circles, cunt has been the most offensive swear-word for thirty years, ruled utterly out of court; I know only one person who uses it, and he's a poet who understands its weight and impact.

I lived for 6 years in the UK. I'm dutch. The word 'kutje' (cunt in dutch) just gets an amused smirk and the phrase 'lulletje' (little dick) back to the guy in question.

And yet in english, I find it vulgar, disgusting and if anyone in the UK called me that while living there I would definitely be upset. Far more than if someone had called me a bitch. Bitch i can see the positive in, as only a woman with a strong opinion is ever calld that. Cunt is bringing a woman down to one body part. I personally would never use the phrase. I think I've typed it more in this post than I've ever used it in my life.
