I was just thinking of rereading this: teru_bozu_ebi's "Dream of the Butterfly" series. Wonderful characterizations , right-on relationships, and damn fine writing. You can't go wrong with this, as long as you don't mind a dragon in the mix. Although the series is about the three of them, its heart is Kenren/Tenpou.
