All the Athosian culture and Athosian characters we get to see in this chapter makes it one of my favourites so far!

Also, one point I really liked was that Jack saw right through the seeming primitivity of the Athosians and likened it to his own family's seemingly primitive lifestyle.

Yes, exactly! Having a simple lifestyle doesn't mean that the people are idiots - or unable to use advanced technology. After all, the Athosians had no problem using the Stargate, and although we only ever see that little fire-starter gizmo of theirs, who says they didn't have anything else hidden in their tents?

The Athosian characters are all nameless extras, mostly seen in the 1st Season episode "Suspicions". I've looked at screencaps on the Net, selected a few faces that I liked, gived them names, and that's what came out of it. Actually, Charin and Selena are both canon, although we only see Selena coming out of Weir(d)'s office and Halling mentioning how insulting the interview had been...

Indeed! It makes for a very interesting contrast which adds some extra spice to their culture.

As you know, I love to play with Athosian culture. I so hope this AU enables me to work out some additional aspects. I've only come up with the clan marriage and the learning languages awfully fast parts of it in my other stories - perhaps this will be the right opportunity, as the Athosians play a much bigger part in it.

Lovely seeing them all having difficulty understanding each other - it's refreshing since most of the time on the various Stargate shows (and on Doctor Who of course) everyone spoke English or at the very least could speak in some other shared language. This seems much more realistic.

I can really picture Gwen's blank looks as she tries to understand what's going on. She strikes me as the kind of person who would speak really loudly at anyone who doesn't speak English, or even to people from other countries who speak perfect English, just because they're 'foreign' and therefore (in her opinion) a bit slow.

Will we see what's been going on in Atlantis next chapter?

Yes, the language question is one of my pet peaves in sci-fi; at least Star Trek has established the universal translator in the very beginning. I love your inner picture of Gwen - that's what she'd most likely do.

And yeah, we will briefly return to Atlantis in the next chapter, but for the following few turns there will be more Athos. The expedition needs to get settled, after all.

It is really good to see all the development of the Athosian society. I like the idea that they can still read Ancient, as it seems plausible. It is also good to see the expedition being sensible in their dealings with the Athosians. I look forward to reading more. :)

I always wanted to address the language barrier problem, but I also wanted to find a relatively quick solution for it. I admit it's a bit similar how they solved the problem in the original Stargate movie, but I think it's worked out well enough.
