I highly recommend Primo PDF, which is a simple "print to file" program which produces nice little PDFs.

What benefits does it offer that Adobe Acrobat doesn’t? I have Acrobat 4, and it already allows me to print to file from Word.

Precisely none! I'm envious of you for having a full-featured version of Acrobat.

It’s a very old version, but it does the job!
