You make absolutely valid points. I especially love the last sentence: "That's not a love story. That's an overblown, delusional soap opera." Made me laugh out loud :D

But yeah. I've really wanted to like Burton's recent films, but I can't. The last one I've really liked was Big Fish. Since then... I eventually warmed up to Sweeney Todd. Corpse Bride was... okay. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory would have been better if they had a Wonka who was more eccentric than just... well, awkward.

Then Alice in Wonderland came along this year. I love Alice in Wonderland. I honestly thought he could do something really cool with it. Sure it was pretty to look at, but in terms of plot he just turned it into an almost generic fantasy quest story. Alice in Wonderland is NOT a generic fantasy quest story. D:

Maybe it's one of those movies which are better left un-rewatched? Fuzzy N-year-old memories of it universally seem better than a fresh look at it (have same problem here)
