Many of us on the chat thread were kind of disappointed with the finale - it felt weak and less epic in the wake of last week's episode. I thought there just wasn't enough plot to carry it. Uther was great but Arthur, Morgana and Gwen were all badly let down by either being given little to do or being cliched versions of their characters.
And don't even get me started on Tom. It's a sham that they're even letting the public vote go ahead because he can't be saved by the public and won't be saved in the dance off.
Yeah, I just read through it -- it did kind of pale in comparison to the Episode of Awesome, but, at the end of the day, the show is called Merlin -- it's about his journey and his development, and it's only fitting that the finale focused on him. It could have done with being darker, like actually having some consequences besides Death Musical Chairs. Personally, I probably would've kept Gaius dead, as much as I like him. And a stronger ending would've been nice -- happy scenes are OK, but I wanted to see the Dragon busting out of prison or something. But, yeah, I think it was just a bit low-key for a finale, but not bad. Maybe I need to watch it again.
I don't really have any problem at all with Merlin having his episode it was just how they utilised the other characters. Seeing them reduced to plot devices for an already thin plot made me sad and gave me less to get invested in to.
Also, it didn't really do much with Merlin's character. I wanted development from him. What I got was he's going to keep Arthur alive (we know), he sees Gaius as a surrogate father (we know) and he loves him mother (we know). The big thing - him actually killing Nimueh essentially in cold blood on very morally grey grounds (she told him the deal and when he didn't like it, he killed her?) wasn't at all addressed. Although it does give me ideas for a fic.

Speaking of which, Morgana seemed all crazed and Ophelia-like in this episode. I like it.
