I was talking to one of my friends about the DSM. He's post-op FtM and for him, that diagnosis was beneficial because he A) needed the counseling and B) most importantly needed the insurance company to pay for his surgeries, which was only possible with the DSM diagnosis.

Is being transgender a mental disorder ( ... )

Oh, I know what it's good for, I just don't agree with it. I'm glad people can use it to their advantage, but it doesn't make me like it. :/

That is completely fair and I'm with you on that. For me it's a systematic problem of how health care and aid for such fails functions in this country than explicitly the psychological field. Though every psychologist who treats sexuality and gender identity like things to be "fixed" can GTFO as far as I'm concerned.
