My roommate and I went to the Artcraft Theatre yesterday to see The Ghost and Mr. Chicken, which is a movie I don't think I would have been very fond of if I'd watched it on my own; but watching it in a theater, with everyone else to laugh with, was a lot of fun ( Read more... )

Maybe there was a back door for the projectionist to escape from? i.e., a metal door came down between the projectionist and the audience, but if the projectionist is behind the audience (which is how it works, right?), then they could still have an exit behind them. I think even in the 1910s dooming a person to certain death would have been a no-no. (But I could be wrong!)

I'm not sure! There was a projectionists' union, and you'd think they'd fight against letting their union members die fiery deaths, but on the other hand maybe they derived a certain macho pride from the danger of their jobs?

I think having a secret back door would probably destroy the benefit of having a big heavy door to keep the fire in, anyway. Surely if the projectionist could escape the fire would find a way to use that bolt hole too.
