I almost posted an EMERGENCY UPDATE when the treasure turned out to be real, but restrained myself. Still! Real treasure! I love Dantes' not-at-all subtle secret inquiries, and I also love that Dumas is able to completely pull off handwaving stunts like, "yep, prison sure does change a guy" and the fact that Dantes was able to fill his pockets with diamonds and get back on the ship with no one noticing, and just sell them to the first dealer he comes across, no questions asked.

Whenever something needs to happen, Dumas is able to tell the reader, "just go with it!" and meet no resistance whatsoever. That's an impressive skill!

How will Dumas continue to top what has come before? I'm not sure, but I'm sure he'll find something.

I have SO MUCH FAITH in Dumas right now. I don't know what's in store for us, but I know it's going to be A M A Z I N G.

The problem with EMERGENCY UPDATES about The Count of Monte Cristo is that once you've set the precedent, I'm sure it would end with EMERGENCY UPDATES every other day. There are thrilling incidents practically every chapter! (Have you gotten to the part where we learn about Mercedes' fate?)

I am pretty sure Dumas plotted by getting a bit tipsy with some friends and arguing about what would be the MOST AMAZING plot development to happen next, and then going home and breathlessly writing it out. He packs so much excitement into each chapter!
