X-Files

We had a power outage at work today, which made it impossible to make lattes, so I ended up going home half an hour early. This is not so very early, but nonetheless it made me feel energized: some extra time!

I used it to watch an episode of the X-Files, which I have been enjoying so far - I'm four or five episodes into the first season. I think ( Read more... )

The X-Files is on my to watch list. It's one of those shows I just never caught while it was airing.

There are so many shows to watch, movies to watch, books to read, sometimes it feels overwhelming. So many of them!

I'm doing pretty well on the shows aspect. I feel like I am almost, almost, through my list of things to watch. Though then I'll find more things. But as far as catching up on things that aired previously, I'm almost there.

Books, however, are another matter.

There are literally centuries of books! How am I ever supposed to catch up?

I try not to fret about it too much.

This show was my religion in the 90s. My DVD boxsets are still on the top shelf above the TV. It's like some kind of weird shrine even though I don't even watch any TV anymore.

I hardly ever rewatch anything, but I have boxed sets of some of my favorite TV shows anyway, i guess mostly so that when I look at them I am reminded of their existence and feel a happy glow about the existence of such a good show.

Yeah, that's one of the problems with the premise. The show is about supernatural spooky stuff, so Mulder has to always be right.

In the case of this particular episode, it's actually pretty easy to ignore Mulder's NEANDERTHALS!!!! theory, because the woods people are so obviously normal humans with really dirty hair. Clearly they attempted a back to nature experiment that got wildly out of hand.

Over the long run, though, Mulder's general rightness may grate on me. I guess we'll see.

I don't remember the Neanderthals episode at all. But I remember the first few seasons being pretty great overall, Mulder's rightness notwithstanding. There's some individual stinker episodes, but also some amazing/hilarious meta episodes coming up later. And some genuinely scary ones. Have you already seen "Squeeze?"

Definitely don't miss "Clyde Bruckmann's Final Repose."

The one with the elastic guy who slides through vents and things? Yeah, that was scary. I can see why Mulder didn't shoot him, but I doubt any prison is going to hold that guy for long.

It is pretty hilarious how right Mulder is all the time. The show gets around to lampshading this at times in the later seasons but yeah, it's a thing.

I loved TXF. It was my gateway to fandom and fanfiction, actually. I discovered slash through TXF! (Have you met Krycek yet? Ahahahaha.)

I'm only on episode five, so I think I've got a season to go before Krycek shows up. I've heard he's Russian, though, so I'm pretty excited about him. Does he have an accent? Please tell me he has an accent. I was so disappointed in the 1960s Man from UNCLE because Illya's accent was not particularly Russian.

I forget if he has an accent, but he and Mulder are one of the all-time great hatesex pairings. You can cut the subtext with a knife.

Sorry! I don't think he has an accent - he's an American who speaks Russian and has a Russian background, rather than a Russian in America. (I agree with Rachel about that subtext though. Talk about formative slash pairings...)
