What I've Just Finished Reading

Lauren Esker's Wolf in Sheep's Clothing, which is a shifter romance (werewolves and weresheep, in this case), and very cute, although probably moreso if the tropes of shifter romance are your thing. Unfortunately the tropes that the genre focuses on seem to be the ones that don't do much for me, but that is a ( Read more... )

Perhaps I'll focus on catching up on all those L. M. Montgomery books I haven't gotten around to yet! The library has The Story Girl; I could pick it up tomorrow...

I was thinking this afternoon that I still owe you a letter.

Miss Marjoribanks looks good, doesn't it! I loved sartorias's review.

What shifter tropes are you thinking of when you talk about the tropes not doing much for you?

Always excited for more letters!

Shifter romances tend to be big on the mate bond, which doesn't do much for me, and not so much on ways that being an animal would be different from being a human, or how that might shape shifter cultures. And how very, very different the cultures of different shifters might be; I guess I want more culture shock and worldbuilding.

This is actually something that Wolf in Sheep's Clothing gestures at more than the other shifter romances I've read have, but what it really brought home to me is that what I really want is not a romance at all but a book with rich world-building all about shifter culture and history and maybe a dash of romance, but that's sort of to the side.
