Prompt: Honeydukes

Ambrosius Flume is almost closing up when he catches sight of a boy standing at the corner of the shop. "We're almost done for the day," he tells him. "Are you buying or not?"

The boy, a scrawny and scowling little thing--either First or Second Year in Hogwarts, he guesses--glares at him before walking up to the counter. "I'll buy this," he mutters, putting a small bag on the counter.

The shopowner tries not to notice how the boy awkwardly counts his coins and places them on the counter; instead, he opts to busy himself with closing up and checking the inventory on the shelf twice. When he returns, the boy is now glaring at the other more expensive chocolates, as if waiting for them to melt with his stare.

Flume smiles. "Is this a present?"

"What if it is?" the boy mumbles into his scarf.

Flume hands him a blank card, trying to look professional but also kind. "I'll ring this up for you while you write a dedication." He leaves the boy again while he slowly weighs the bag, and gives the extra effort of counting each preciously collected chocolate twice even though it is unnecessary. When he finishes, he returns to the boy and glances at the card.

"Remus" it says, but it is crossed. "Lupin," it starts again, but erased once more. "Lupin, I saw you eating this and it's my favorite cho" It says, but it is crossed again, many times.

"Would you like another card?" Flume asks kindly.

The boy glances at him, troubled, before he sneers, "He won't need it." He grabs the bag Flume hands him. "He won't need it," he repeats, as if to himself.

"But you--"

"It's not important," Severus cut in coldly, for once meeting his eyes and refusing to turn his back to Remus. "What is important is that you'll be able to use this to our advantage."

Damn the war, Remus wanted to scream, but he swallowed the words and stared at Severus' bare chest. He could feel the flutter of feathers against his back and wondered how Severus' own wings must feel. "I just," he stammered, "I just think..."

"What you must remember then," Severus went on, "is that your wings will carry you farther, and you'll be able to ride the wind faster without actually making an effort."

"Severus," Remus tried, but Severus did not blink.

"And you will be able to avoid detection by going higher--"

Remus grabbed his arm and flinched when Severus barely concealed a wince. The torn bat wings twitched and again Severus grimaced, now unable to look at him. Blood dripped on his bare back. Remus embraced him, fingers gingerly touching the torn appendages. Severus hissed. "There's no need for this maudlin display of--"

"You're hurt," Remus choked up, barely containing his anger. The transfiguration spell Minerva prepared for them was a powerful one, giving them extra strength with the growth of wings. This had made Remus too cocky, too unprepared, and Severus had paid...

"You've delayed long enough," Severus replied roughly. Then, more softly, "I'll be fine."

There was blood on Remus' fingers, dripping over his wrists. The appendages were temporary, but still, Severus was already pale. Remus put his blood-soaked fingers over his eyes.

"I'll come back for you," he told Severus huskily. "I'll come back."

"Don't--" Severus hesitated, looking out the window. Then, briefly, he touched Remus' face, tracing the already-drying blood. "I'll wait." He gives him a gentle push. "Go, now."

Farther, faster, higher, Severus had told him. Remus turned away and went out of the cottage, facing the darkening sky. This voice would guide him, this god with broken and bloodied wings. It would have to be enough for him to succeed in their mission. It would be enough.

And, like an angel, Remus flew.
