Whoa ... this is really something. I love how you captured John's rawness post Mary's death; it's not just from the loss of her but also how he came to be as a hunter.

Thank you! I know it's been tackled to death, but I've always wanted to try a hand at John getting to know the hunting community with a little push from Mary. embroiderama's fic was a great way to go through it. :) Glad you liked it!

This is an awesome exploration of John's head-space, and the way you made work the holes left by canon about the events of 4.03 wrt Elkins is fantastic. It could be canon.

Then he takes Sammy from the crib in the guest room, tucks a sleepy Dean in the backseat next to his brother. Dean watches him with sleepy eyes full of question.

"Happy New Year, buddy," he whispers.

Dean only hugs him briefly before falling back to sleep, snuggling next to the baby seat at the back. Sam's watching them with alert eyes, gurgling at every movement. John gets on the front seat. He doesn't say goodbye to Kate and Mike.

Oh. Oh, break my heart why don't you. John trying to make sense of it and to fix things for his sons, and his concern and attention for them shines through, understated as it is.

"You," Elkins snickers, shakes his head. "Oh, you stupid fucker. You crazy bastard, you're halfway there already. Mary should've known!"Yes, this. This is how you convince a hunter to teach you. When they think you're one of theirs already and if either ( ... )
