George Weasley looked around the empty shop. It was silent, one of George’s worst fears. He hated silence for many reasons, the most important being that there was always something waiting in the silence.

He looked at the shelves, fully-stocked and ready to be torn apart in the morning. The evening was warm and the sun was just setting outside. He watched families chase their children in their sundresses and shorts, laughing loudly, dropping their ice cream and scraping their knees. He remembered when he and Fred would run down Diagon Alley like that, their mother screaming after them, Fred tripping and faceplanting on the cobblestone, George cackling as loud as he could. The sound of them laughing rang through his memory, down to his chest, hitting his heart like a Cruciatus.

He ruffled his hair as he looking sadly upon the Extendable Ears. That was their creation, Fred and George: tested and approved! It all seemed so long ago, it was only a few years back, really. But each year, each month, each day, each moment that passed felt like so much more, he longed for the days when he felt whole.

A light tap at the door made George snap out of his phase and look and see, through the freshly cleaned glass, a blonde girl with a silly blue and orange hat, waving brightly. He grinned widely and walked over to the door, opening it and bowing as she entered, “Miss Lovegood, a pleasure.”

She smiled softly, clutching a small leather pouch to her chest, “Hello, George.” She looked up at the shelves of the store, curiosity plain on her face, “Did you stock these yourself?”

George closed the door behind her, laughing quietly to himself, “Er, yeah. It’s mostly just me these days, you know. Fred’s not really around to stock shelves or come up with new ideas or…,” his voice trailed off. He rubbed his face roughly with his hands, inhaling sharply.

Luna walked over and took George’s hand, “Do you want to talk about it?” Her face in a dreamy half-smile which George felt his face mimic. It was so comforting to have someone like Luna. He couldn’t understand why people would give her a hard time; Luna Lovegood was the kindest and sweetest person he knew.

George breathed in shakily, “It’s… it’s not something I think-“

“George?” she swung their hands lightly. “Tell me what’s wrong, please.”

His face screwed up as tears started to stream down his face, “A part of me is missing.”

Luna wrapped her arms tightly around George’s middle, “Fred’s just gone away for a little bit, he’ll be back. Everything comes back in time.”

George sniffed, patting Luna’s back, “Fred?”

Luna nodded encouragingly, “Fred.”

“Fred?” George asked again, “What does Fred have to do with anything? I’m talking about my ear! I’m never going to be able to hear out of both ears again because, oh right, I don’t have both!” He rubbed the spot where his ear had been hexed off, sobbing uncontrollably. Luna hugged him tighter, letting him sob against her.

“There, there, George,” she pat his back. “I think it suits you.”

George held her closer, smiling at her attempt to chee- wait, is she serious?
