why is it so blimming hard to just find/open a straight forward, no thrills, no fuss, no debit card, no overdraft current account suitable to use with paypal, and put cash/cheque deposits into

because banks make their money on the debt you have so having no credit/debit card or overdraft doesn't earn them any cash.
