It could have been that Monette was involved in one of the original race fails on lj. (I mean of that chain of them, not original of all time.) She's good friends with Elizabeth Bear and jumped in to defend her friend when Bear was being a dick on the internet. I can't remember what she actually said, but people took up against her pretty direly.

I think some people are also put off by the HP fanfic style of the novels, too. (I've read them all, btw, but it's been a long time.)

Ahahah, I remember coming across Monette's apology post but I somehow kind of missed the whole debacle in the first place. =/

There are definitely some elements that remind me of fandom in general-- I was a little surprised to see this actually published as some things are a bit dark/taboo for mainstream publishing? Or used to be? But I've never read HP fic, so I don't know how typical the series is of that.
