around the year 1000 some people in Europe thought that the Second Coming of Chirst was going to occur. They didn't plant their crops and generally let things go because they thought it was the end. When they starved to death that winter, it turned out to be correct.

Personally, I hold practicality above faith, but that's me -- my views were pretty much established with my post above.

It's too bad that some haven't learned from history -- and while people may argue that no one would do that sort of thing nowadays, they may fail to realize we're just doing it on a grander scale now, and can't see the forest for the trees.
