I love the judges obvious boredom and incipient disgust turning into shock and pleasure. This version of the show is shot and edited far more ably than the American one.
What a lovely voice and what a lovely surprise.
All of that being said (and not to diminish his performance, because I think he did a terrific job and if he hadn't had the voice, it wouldn't have had the same impact) Nessun Dorma is one of those arias that does a lot of the work for you when you perform it. The drama and beauty and crescendoing emotion are built right in and the audience's response is pretty carefully managed by the music itself. At least, that's been my observation from performing it for years as a striptease :)
He made everyone cry and I think he blew one of Simon's 'logic' boards. Simon needs to have less 'logic' boards anyway, maybe it would make him a bit less of a soul-crushing asshole. o_O
