You knew it was coming: another big doping bust in cycling.

Just like the infamous 1998 Festina affair, this year’s drama played out about 48 hours prior to the start of the Tour de France. Of course, back then the riders vigorously protested the treatment of the accused riders. Among the fallout was an effort to codify doping controls in every ( Read more... )

No goo or caffeine? Wow, that's hardcore.

Cyclists even make up a small number of the athletes named in the Operacion Puerto files. It’s just that....no athletes from any other sport have yet been named?

Moncoutie! I hadn't thought of him.

Tests: one of the things I was googling about last night was HCG, since it had been mentioned as one of the drugs Fuentes had around. And since it's a strange one; I'm familiar with it because it's what pregnancy tests look for, so it's not exactly the sort of thing you associate with males. Apparently it washes out of the system pretty quickly, but in the meantime it promotes endogenous testosterone production in males. So it's hard to find in tests, because the testosterone itself is 100% natural.

Isn't that the way the whole doping game works, though? A continual arms race to keep ahead of what's testable? That was the whole popularity of EPO...anytime a test is developed which catches a particular drug, they'll move on to another one.

Yeah. Goo just doesn't seem like something I'd tolerate well, and nearly
all of it contains caffeine, which is something I've taken pains to
avoid. I guess I just don't think it improves my quality of life any,
and I essentially cut it out of my diet several years ago. I get by just
fine on Gatorade, dried fruit, bananas, and the occasional salty snack.
Oh, and maybe it's a bigoted opinion, but I don't think goos or caffeine
give me anything that I wouldn't get from some good, solid
training rides... ;^)
